Fundraiser to Fight Miami-Dade BSL Ordinance Held in Coral Gables PDF Print E-mail

When a gunman burst through the door of Roberta Trawick’s home, her dog D-Boy leapt into action. CNN reported that the gunman shot D-Boy twice in the head but the canine continued to fight to protect his family. After shooting the dog a third time with no effect, the gunman fled. What CNN did not report was that the lifesaving pet was a Pit Bull.

The Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation (MCABSL) recently held a fundraiser for the much maligned and often misunderstood Pit Bull. Hosted by Brasserie Les Halles restaurant in Coral Gables, the event was well attended by dog lovers and animal rights advocates from throughout south Florida.

The purpose and mission of this fundraiser was to raise the much needed funds to eradicate the hell out of the nightmarish Breed Specific Legislation ordinance. Enacted in 1989, the ordinance bans Pit Bulls and other specific breeds deemed ‘dangerous’ by the county.

This inhumane ordinance is solely responsible for the persecution and killing of thousands of innocent canines. This ordinance certainly does not protect the general population and does nothing for the welfare of Pit/Pit Mix dogs, whose responsible owners are left with a hefty fine and a family loss. …but please don’t allow me to step upon the traditional soap box or a newly published encyclopedia on Pits will result. So, back to the event…the hors d’ oeuvres prepared and served by Les Halles, were simply divine, the wines being poured by OWS...delightfully intoxicating, the music jamming thru the place by Lisa M was fantastic. Twin Soul resounding on percussion…well…let me just say table top dancing was minutes away.

There was an on going silent auction and live drawing with incredible prizes...something for everyone. The members of this coalition, of whom I am proud to be one of the directors, are Edel Miedes (Our other director and my partner in crime), Jeri, Jesus, Jade, Galit, Annie, Jessie, and Michelle. The volunteers who gave us their time and support were: Marielos, Kathy, Alexis, and David. The event was covered on site by GaySoFla and Miami~Gay~Blog.

Before the event, Edel and I had been on numerous radio stations speaking out against BSL and promoting the upcoming event. Specifically on 93 Rock with Erin…this radio station had the balls to air a controversial issue without fear of consequences…Thank You!

Our many sponsors, who so generously donated prizes were: Mercedes Benz of Coral Gables, Cesar Milan, K.B.Y.O. Hair Salon, Country Inn Animal Hospital & Pet Resort, Sabbath T-Shop, The Beauty Lounge, Duke & Duchess Dog Grooming, Lisa Shaw, Jim Harris, Actor’s Playhouse, Miami Lake Jewelers, Chops Restaurant, Benihana, California Pizza Kitchen, Qdoba Mexican Grill, The Dog Bar, The Goddess Store & Studio, Ambiente Magazine, Hialeah Flowers, De Jesus Chiropractic Center, K-9 Advisors, Drew Estate Cigars, Bernadette, and many others…The production was a success...thanks to Midnight Witch Productions. Our counsel Rima was also there…forever asking questions as if prepping up for the big day in court!

Throughout the evening there was laughter and a spirit of love for our so called best friends. Still…there were the photos and videos displayed of Pit Bulls and other breeds this BSL has impacted so greatly…reminding us of the road before us and the hardships to come. The reality of this event definitely set in… for everyone left there that evening with the true conviction and moral ethics of what this event was really all about.

Recently, the local news media reported a story about a dog rescuing a family. This animal saved his family from certain death at the hands of a home intruder. The dog chased the intruder out, but not before it took on a couple of bullets.

The story of D-Boy mentioned at the begging of this report illustrates the unfair rap Pit Bulls get. Google the story and you’ll notice that most news reports omit the fact that D-Boy was a Pit Bull. He wasn’t a Basset Hound or a Poodle. D-Boy, a Pit Bull, saved his family from a gun wielding killer.

Nevertheless...there you have it! This story is another reminder of why MCABSL organized the fundraiser and this is why we will work aggressively to raise more funding to fight BSL. This canine holocaust, this genocide of a specific breed will be eradicated from Miami-Dade County.

Yours in hope & commitment,

Dahlia

P.S. Get Out there and adopt for life, please!
