The blogosphere is all aflutter about how gay last weekend's 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on NBC were. "Could the Emmys have been any gayer?" one blogger asked. "Emmys a gay affair!" another digital journalist proclaimed. Well, I say it's about time.
Upon hearing her name as winner for best supporting actress in a comedy for her role as Coach Sylvester on the hit Fox Television series Glee, out Lesbian actress Jane Lynch kissed her wife and thanked Ryan Murphy, the series' openly gay director. Murphy, who won for best director of a Comedy (GLEE ), kissed his boyfriend before running on stage to claim his award. In his acceptance speech, Murphy thanked "my great partner, Dick Miller". Out director Paris Barclay was also nominated in the same category as Murphy.
The uproar over ABC's "Modern Family", a gay-friendly comedy, has been building with the anti-gay American Family Association calling for a boycott on companies that advertise on the show. The big question surrounding the show this season when will gay characters Cam and Mitchell kiss? That question was answered at Sunday night's awards show when Erik Stonestreet (Cam) won best supporting actor in a comedy. He kissed his wife and then kissed his TV husband, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell).
There were other gay moments scattered throughout the evening. Openly gay actor Aaron Paul, winner of best supporting actor in a drama for his role in "Breaking Bad," kissed his partner. Out gay actor Neil Patrick Harris won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Emmy for his appearance on Glee and was nominated for Supporting Actor in a Comedy for How I Met Your Mother.
Despite not winning the Supporting Actor nod, Harris seemed to be thrilled to be a part of the whole affair. Harris uttered one of the funnier lines of the show when he proclaimed: “I’d like to thank the Academy for allowing a gay man to host show two years in a row. Congratulations Jimmy! You’re doing a great job!” Straight comedian Jimmy Fallon served as host of the 62 Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards. Harris served as host of last year's awards show.
All the gayness didn't seem to hurt the show's ratings. The 62nd Primetime Emmys boasted ratings that were slightly higher than last year's 13.47 million viewers. This year over 13.5 million people tuned in. Boycott that, AFA!
