Some of Hollywood’s biggest names have joined forces with The Trevor Project to fight gay youth suicide. The Trevor Project, the country’s only 24/7 LGBT youth suicide prevention helpline,
recently announced some pretty impressive partnerships with some of the film industry’s biggest names.
In January, actor Neil Patrick Harris and Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black were elected to the Trevor Project's board of directors. Last week, Harry Potter Star Daniel Radcliffe shot a public service announcement (PSA) on behalf of the foundation.
While Harris and Black are both self-proclaimed gays, young Radcliffe is not. But Radcliffe hopes his involvement in the ad campaign will encourage all people to be more tolerant for all sexual orientations. "The fact that I am straight makes not a difference, but it shows that straight people are incredibly interested and care a lot about this as well,” said Radcliffe.
According to an interview he gave E! Online, the actor says he was inspired to take a stand after confronting intolerant people for the first time as a teen. "I grew up knowing a lot of gay men, and it was never something that I even thought twice about - that some men were gay and some weren't.” Radcliffe stated. “And then I went to school and (for) the first time, I came across homophobia. I had never encountered it before. It shocked me,” Radcliffe explained.
Radcliffe hopes his notoriety as an actor will catch people’s attention and give pause to those who see the announcement. He also hopes struggling gay and questioning teens will find some hope in the fact that there are other people, both gay and straight, who care about them. The PSA is expected to air in the spring.
