Up Close & Personal with Latina Diva Gloria Trevi PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dahlia Canes

Controversial Latin pop singer-songwriter Gloria Trevi returns to the stage for her first batch of new songs in three years with the release of Una Rosa Blu (Univision).  Trevi (born Gloria de los Ángeles Treviño Ruiz on February 15, 1968 in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico) is an iconic Mexican pop-rock singer, songwriter, cartoonist, actress, pinup-model, forward/fashion designer, writer and painter.   I recently caught up with this multi-talented Latina Diva for a quick girl chat.

Dahlia:  What is your first recollection of your interest in music?

Gloria:
Singing kid songs we all liked to sing in our childhood…I use to sing for other kids and they would applaud me! I felt like an artist…I was hooked…

Dahlia:  Who would you say you can attribute your success to?

Gloria:
I never had a so-called “God Father”. No specific producer or any specific record label. Of course there are various producers…but none specific. The parties “de quinces” were one of my greatest influences…and the small clubs I played in. Janis Joplin was a great influence and the street itself…”La Calle”.

Dahlia:  What are your goals?

Gloria:
HA! A lot! The release of my music…to be able to reach and accomplish a world wide cross over…France, Brazil…Germany, Russia…everywhere! To be able to unite all those hearts thru my music!

Dahlia:  What are some of your life’s passions?

Gloria:
The stage! That special connection with the audience…is impressive! I don’t really care for red carpets, interviews and the likes but the stage...ah! I come alive… also...my children…sex… and the hands of the man that I love!

Dahlia:  As you know Gloria, I am an animal activist so I must ask you this question…what’s your take on animals?

Gloria:
I love them! When I was 13 or 14 years of age, I would pick them up off the streets…at one point I had something like 30 cats…my Mom was going insane! … I loved them all…

Dahlia:  Your family?

Gloria:
I have “2 Cabrones” (2 boys) and they don’t seem to be cooperative...lolol...my Mom helps me out with them. My boyfriend (didn’t get a name)…also takes care of them. He loves them very much and my kids adore him! I’ve always had the support of my family.

Dahlia:  What is it like being a Latin woman in the music industry?

Gloria:
I think it is difficult for any woman in general. It’s hard to accept another woman from another woman…you know the jealousies, the trust issue…but once you get over that initial hurdle…and you conquer their hearts…it is marvelous. I count with the support and love of the “chicas” (girls). The “chavas” bring their boyfriends to my concerts

Dahlia:  (At this point in the interview I make a revelation.)  Well Gloria…I wouldn’t exactly be bringing my boyfriend…you see…

Gloria:  Oh? That’s fine too...///laughs out loud// I have a lot of good friends that are Gay…
Dahlia:  What is the name of your latest CD?

Gloria:
   Una Rosa Blue”.

Dahlia:  And the title song recently blasting all over the world?

Gloria:   “Psicofonia”…it’s a story of a ghost and a crazy woman…quite interesting…

Dahlia:   Are you presently involved with anyone?

Gloria:   YES! My very jealous boyfriend…

Dahlia:  Any upcoming events you want to share with our readers?

Gloria:   Well...let’s see … tomorrow I leave for Washington…I’m doing a show for the Spanish Embassy there. Then I depart to Los Angeles, then Arizona… I go see my kids in Mexico…then off to Atlanta, and back to Mexico. Yes...I think that’s the plan…

Dahlia:  Any message you’d like to share with the readers of GaySOFLA?

Gloria:   Live Intensely! I get a lot of inner strength from the Gay community...from the immigrants searching for a better life…the sick…that value life…be humane… And with that, my dear readers, I end this very easy going interview with a simple, caring and passionate artist that just happens to be an international diva!
