Television talk show extraordianire Ellen DeGeneres has wed Portia de Rossi. The couple married over the weekend at their home in Los Angeles. De Rossi wore a pink and cream Zac Posen wedding gown, while DeGeneres wore a matching suit.
The 50 year old DeGeneres recently joked that the nuptials were getting out of hand: "Planning a wedding is very stressful. It's crazy. My gardener is now invited."
In the end, however, the ceremony was attended by only 19 guests, including DeGeneres's mother, Betty, and de Rossi's mother, Margaret, who flew in from Australia. They exchanged handwritten vows in an "intimate ceremony", the couple's spokesman told People magazine.
Talk show host DeGeneres and de Rossi, 35, the former Ally McBeal star, have been together since December 2004. DeGeneres announced the wedding plans in May after California's Supreme Court legalised same-sex marriage.
The following month, de Rossi showed off a three-carat diamong ring as she and DeGeneres posed on the red carpet at the Daytime Emmy Awards.
DeGeneres recently challenged Senator John McCain, an adversary of gay marriage, when the presumptive Republican presidential nominee came on her show as a guest. She went on to invite McCain to her wedding, though he did not attend.
Opponents of gay marriage have gathered signatures for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. But one wedding guest told the Chicago Sun-Times: "I only wished someone from one of those anti-gay marriage groups could have witnessed the great outpouring of love and respect between Ellen and Portia.
"Then they might better understand that love is not about gender... it's about two people who are totally dedicated to each other and their relationship."
